I find myself telling many of my patients that they need to lose weight. But, it’s easy to say it, and really hard to do it. We are bombarded each day with advertisements for quick weight loss, and easy weight loss. I can tell you one thing: it IS NOT easy and it SHOULD NOT be fast.
So, if you are expecting earth shattering, new information – it is not going to be found here. What you will find are those things that need to be in your diet, and those things you need to remove. It is not necessarily about counting calories, instead it is about eating foods that are good for you. But, the old saying is still true you have to eat fewer calories than you use.
While many foods taste good, the truth is the ARE NOT – in fact, they are slowly killing you! Forget about how much weight you may have to lose, simply think about making healthy choices. Be on the lookout, I will soon be adding healthy, whole food recipes – so you can get cooking, and get healthy!
So, let’s look at the basics of weight loss. I will be focusing primarily on your diet with five of my best tips. Each night will include another tip – so, keep reading!
1) Drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of WATER!
Water is a basic necessity, needed to maintain a healthy body, a clear mind, and a good balance within your tissues. About 60 percent of your body is water, and you must constantly replenish the supply, as it’s used continuously in the processes of life. Many people fail to drink enough of it.
Make sure you drink an 8 ounce glass of water prior to each meal. Studies have shown you will eat less if you drink water. Also, when you are hungry – reach for water first. Did you know your brain signals for thirst and hunger come from the same place? Therefore, sometimes you are actually thirsty, when you think you are hungry.
I have always recommended drinking high-quality bottled water or, if possible, getting a water-purification system for your home. In the recent past, there has been a lot of talk about specially, oxygenated water. I have heard that this water has cured diabetes, joint problems, etc. First, it is important to note that God made our bodies so amazing that our stomach is designed to adjust to its optimal pH balance no matter what you ingest. For instance, once alkaline water enters your stomach, your body simply pours in greater amounts of acid to neutralize it. So, how can this water cure diabetes, etc? Just think: many people who begin drinking this alkaline water were not drinking water in the first place. So, simply drinking lots of water is obviously healthy and good for you. It’s not necessarily the type of water, but the amount.
If you don’t like water, I recommend naturally flavoring water. Check out this website: http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/other-recipes/quick-and-easy-flavored-water
I am not a fan of diet drinks and sweeteners. There are in fact studies that show a correlation between the artificial sweeteners and cancer.
While soft drinks have been a part of our culture for years – consider these alternative uses for your can of coke or pepsi:
For those of you who LOVE Coke/Pepsi. Just when you thought you knew everything.
a) To clean a toilet:
Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl.
Let the “real thing” sit for one hour, then flush clean.
The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
No scrubbing, no sweat – guaranteed.
b) To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers:
Rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of aluminum foils dipped in Coca-Cola.
It is much more economical than the stuff from Smart Shop.
c) To clean corrosion from car battery terminals;
Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
d) To loosen a rusted bolt;
Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
e) To remove grease from clothes;
Empty a can of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle.
f) Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.
I hope I have convinced you, now, go have a glass of water!
